About Sparks Estate

THE HOME:
Sparks Estate Cheshire Home is a registered Welfare residential facility providing residential care for 48 severely mentally & physically handicapped children and some adults.  The Home caters for residents; from all our communities in the, KwaZulu Natal region since 1979, and it is now in 2011 31 years in existence.  It is situated at 145 Mary Road, Sydenham.

THE ACTIVITIES FOR OUR RESIDENTS:
Our Home participates in Special Stimulation programmes.  Residents do ten-pin bowling, races, gymnastics and soccer at University of KwaZulu Natal.  Some received certificates for their performances.  Students from the University of Durban Westville provide physiotherapy and occupational therapy.  Recently, Sparks Estate Cheshire Home has purchased its own equipment for this activity.

In our recreation room we have T.V. and music.  Birthday parties are treated as important occasions, as well as Christmas parties, for our residents.  Water therapy for our residents is practised in the swimming pool, which is on the premises.

During the year our residents enjoy beach excursions, an open day, a Cheshire Homes Family day, Sports day and several parties.

Every week some of our residents are transported to local parks and venues, for recreation and supervised activities.  Thanks to the National Lottery distribution fund we now have our very own Educare Stimulation room, and a 15-seater bus, which is modified with a wheelchair hoist.

The Home has a loyal, dedicated, responsible staff of 34 members.  Most have served the home for many years and maintain a high standard of care for the residents.
